About
Born in Kortrijk (Belgium) as Dieter Van Holder on June 28th 1985, I grew up in the southwest of West-Flanders. As a child from a Western-European middle-class family I try to get by without being totally consumed by the rat race, but one thing I could never escape was an aesthetic consciousness.
Every day holds infinite possibilities. The sheer number of experiences we could have are uncountable but most of the time we live trapped in loops. Reliving a few days over and over. We envision only a handful of paths laid out ahead of us. We see the same things each day. We respond the same way. We think the same thoughts. Each day a slight variation on the last.
Photography helps me to escape that feeling. If you disagree with me just take a camera with you the next time you go somewhere. You will feel the potential in people, objects and scenes you normally wouldn't even notice. To me it became an addiction. The rewards that got me hooked aren't just images. It's all the great people I've met and hope to meet. The experiences I had andthe ones I hope to have in the future.
This photoblog is my visual scrapbook of the time and places I live in.
I use this blog as a platform from which I can interact with people. Purely dwelling websites and fora is a bit too nomadic to my taste. I felt the need for a place to stash my loot. In late spring of 2006 I told my friend Pieter Vanoverberghe about this and he proposed to help me get the job done. We looked at a lot of photoblogs and tried out some engines like Wordpress but we decided that if we wanted something exactly to our taste, we'd have to build it ourselves. We were both very occupied with daily life but Pieter never let me down and coded whenever he had some time to spare. It took us almost a year but piece by piece our project came to life.
When people stop by to have a look at the images I've caught I want to let the images do the talking. That's why (besides captions to facilitate archiving) I won't be adding any text. I enjoy looking and that's what I want you to experience here. Looking shouldn't be reading.
For those of you who are curious about my tools of trade, I use a Canon Eos 350D with a Sigma 18 - 50 f/2.8 and Adobe Photoshop
for cross processing.
As a photographer I work for music club De Kreun and worked for the rock photography collective wannabes.be. I've also had the honor of working with Pieter Taelman and his team as a set photographer of their shortfilm: Dossier C (http://www.dossierc.be). I've also worked with Klup Artistiek from time to time (http://www.klupartistik.be).
I graduated from college (English, Dutch and Geography) in June 2008 and spent a year in the Belgian combat infantry. I am currently a high school teacher.
Enjoy your stay!
Dieter
